Kidnapping is a phenomenon intrinsically bound-up with issues of security and (im)mobility. It entails unlawful deprivation of liberty but is also a crime threat that 'travels'. In Mexico, which currently enjoys the dubious reputation of 'kidnap capital of the world', it has reached epidemic proportions.
